Commencement 2013 www.brevard.edu/clarion Volume 78, Issue 32 Web Edition SERVING BREVARD COLLEGE SINCE 1935 ] Voice of the Rivers takes on the legendary Suwanee River See pages 8-9 May 16, 2013 Brevard's newest alumni More than 100 receive diplomas in collegers 160th commencement exercise Under cloudy skies with occasional periods of sunlight, and accompanied by breezes that flut tered flags and banners and sometimes wreaked havoc with speakers’ notes, proud parents, fam ily and friends gathered on campus Saturday to watch the class of 2013 receive their diplomas. “Well, we did it,” Mark Moseley said at the beginning of his speech—one of two delivered by members of the graduating class. “We, the class of 2013 can finally take a deep breath and relax because, yes, we did it!” The ceremony in the college’s Betty Neale Academic Quadrangle was the culminating event in the college’s 160th Commencement Exercise. On Friday, graduates and candidates gathered in the Porter Center for the baccalaure ate and hooding ceremony, in which graduates receive hoods indicative of their field of study by a Brevard College faculty or staff member chosen by the student. That ceremony was fol lowed by a campus picnic, which took place in Myers Dining Hall because of the threat of rain. The rains held off Saturday, however, long enough for more than 100 seniors to officially become Brevard College graduates and begin the next phase of their lives. “It’s time for all of you to head off to the new careers and the new lives you will be fashion ing for yourselves,” President David Joyce told graduates. “We trust you leave much the better for your Brevard College experiences.” As is a tradition at Brevard College, the cer More Commencement Weekend news and photos inside! emony featured two speakers from the graduat ing class: Moseley, a Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education maj or from Wilmington, Delaware, and Chelsea Nicole Preciado, an en vironmental studies major from Franklin, Tenn. “What we have learned at Brevard College is the realization that what happens to one of us does not happen to one of us,” Moseley said. “What happens to one of us happens to all of us—it affects us all. During our times here, we have depended on each other. We have been supported, we have given support.” Mosely stressed the importance of community in his speech, calling it “the gift of the Brevard College experience” that graduates would take with them as they leave Brevard.
